Troubles installing KB954960 on German SBS 2008
While setting up a new SBS 2008, i ran into a problem with installing KB954960 – a WSUS Update. It immediately said “Abgebrochen” when trying to install it through Windows Update. Trying to install the update manually instantly showed the reason why it didn work, though.
The reason for this failure is that it expects the WSUS groups to have English names – until this is fixed, there is an easy workaround to install the update:
Rename the group “WSUS-Administratoren” to “WSUS Administrators”
Rename the group “WSUS-Berichterstatter” to “WSUS Reporters”
This will allow the update to install. It might make sense to rename the groups back to their original names, in case some other script depends on their names.
Another reason why running non-US versions of Windows is a bad idea in production environments – you just get additional trouble with zero advantages – but that’s for another post.

I am curious how you managed to find the solution. I search for a minute and didn’t find anything relevant. Was it something in the event viewer? Sounds like the error message “abort” was not very helpful.
Never think about Windows in other languages….guess that is a lucky thing!

I tried installing the patch manually, which brought up a much more meaningful error message.

Thanks! :-)
I had the same problem on an italian SBS2008 and I fixed it by using your suggestion!

I can’t even find the “WSUS-Administratörer”-group/user on my english SBS2008, it’s migrated from a sbs 2003 that was also english.
I’m Swedish though so somehow i’ve destroyed it.
I used ADSI Edit to check through the AD and i couldn’t find any references to “WSUS-Administratörer”.

I have also installed 2 SBS 2008 Standard servers (English) with locale Dutch.
Groups that Existed;
‘WSUS Administrators’
‘WSUS Reporters’
I had to add the groups WSUS-Administrators and WSUS-Reporters, hence the – sign.
Guess it’s the used locale what triggers the ‘wrong’ groups at SBS installation?

Same problem here. The comment of Grimson solved it.
