IBM System x3650
A few weeks ago, i deployed my first IBM x3650. In general, i think the x3650 is a very nicely made machine. I’m not going to talk about features which are pretty standard in all middle class IBM machines, like light path diagnostics.
Here’s the configuration i ordered:
- System x3650 Xeon 2Ghz DC, with 2x512MB Base Memory, 2.5″ SAS Open Bay
- 2GB additional Memory
- RSA II slimline
- 4x 73GB 2.5″ SAS Disks
- Redundant PSU Kit
- PCI-X Riser Card
- PCI-X U320 SCSI Adapter
Unpacking and opening
![]()
The server arrived on a standard wooden pallet, secured in nicely in the box, with styropor for dampening around it. The box also contained an UPS powercable, a detailed manual for installing options, and of course the rack mount kit with cable tray.
After removing the server from the packaging, which was rather easy to do, i inspected the machine for damage or faults. There were none to be found. One of the interesting think was that the 2.5″ SAS Disk blanks don’t hold very well in the system. It didn’t look good, but it’s not a real problem.
One of the first things you will notice is that this server no longer has PS/2 ports. This might be a problem if you have an older KVM switch in operation.
Installing options
![]()
After opening the server, everything had the usual IBM color codes for hot-plug components and touch points. There is a detailed diagram of the server on the inside of the upper lid. Near the CPU/RAM was a table that shows valid memory configurations, which is very nice when you have to upgrade memory.
It’s very nice to see that IBM keeps the in-server documentation on a very high level. For almost every part, there is a short but very concise description on how to maintain, configure or remove it. This is especially helpful if you experience a problem, and have to swap out a component.
![]()
Installing memory into the system was a breeze. Went without any problems. As you can see, the x3650 can take up to 12 sticks of memory, also allowing for highly redundant memory with features like Memory Mirroring and Memory Spares. I’m not going to waste my memory on such a feature, though.
I also had to replace the internal PCI-E riser card with a PCI-X riser card, because IBM doesn’t have any PCI-E SCSI adapters. This wasn’t a problem to do either.
![]()
Together with the redundant power supply, there also comes a supply of redundant fans. The system ships with 5 hot plug fans installed, and the redundant power supply kit comes with 5 fans extra, for a total of 10. They aren’t even that loud, since the usually idle at around 40%. The fans have a very slick spring mechanism, which makes them bump up in their casing, to allow for easy removal.
Installing the RSA card was a bit tricky. It didn’t click into the board as easily as i thought. I had to apply way more force than i had to on previous servers. It went in fine though, and is now working without a hitch.
Booting the server
The hassles begin when booting the server for the first time. Luckily IBM has redesigned it’s server support pages, allowing quick and easy access to all firmware updates at once. As usual, you need to flash a custom firmware to the RSA card, to allow proper support. This time around, i also had to update all the SAS Disks firmware, which was quite a hassle because this didn’t play well with the RSA II CD drive, i had to use the local one.
Installing Windows Server 2003 R2 was uninteresting, went fine without any troubles.
Resumee
Another good x86 from IBM server i can only recommend. If you’re interested in more server reviews like this one, please leave a comment. Currently, the only other machine i could write about is the IBM System x 3250.
Oh, and if you’re interested in buying an IBM System x 3650, give my current employer DATALINE AG a call – we’re an IBM Premier Business Partner.

Reto:
Das System x 3650 ist wirklich ganz nett – kann ich nur nochmals bestätigen. Ausser bei den 146 GB 2.5 SAS Disks, haben sie einige Lieferschwierigkeiten ;)

Well this x3650 is a powerful server, I am using one, but I have a problem, I would be thankful if anyone could help me, I’m trying to install Windows 2003 R2 Standard Editiion with SP2, using Serverguide, after finishing all Serverguide steps, I insert finally the Windows CD as requested, the files are copied, then the CD is ejected and the system reboots to begin the installation, but unfortunately, no installation begins in my system, after the reboot of the system, and after the beep of the successfull POST, I get a blinking cursor on the left of the screen, with nothing happening.
15. July, 2007, 02:41If anybody can advice me I will be graceful.
Regards
Lukas Beeler:
Hi Bernard,
Did you use the latest ServerGuide version? It could be that the one shipped to you is older, and maybe not compatible with SP2. Try to download the latest from the IBM Website.
Also check if your System is configured to boot from it’s harddisks, or try pressing F12 and choosing the ServeRAID controller explicitly.
15. July, 2007, 06:13Neil Bell:
Hi guys,
Any news on whether this sorted the issue as I have exactly the same problem.
Regards,
Neil
1. August, 2007, 18:23Bernard:
Sorry for the big delay, I have been very busy lately.
2. August, 2007, 09:35Lukas: I had the latest ServerGuide CD, and yes I was always trying to boot from the HDDs, either from BIOS, or by pressin F12.
The funny thing is that I have 3 system x3650, with exactly the same configuration, the ServerGuide installation was successful on 2 of them, while it was impossible on the 3rd one, so I had to install windows manually, using F6 option, and it was successful, and this proves that there is no hardware failure in my system.
Regards,
Neil Bell:
Thanks for the reply Bernard (and Lukas). I will have a go just doing a standard windows install and loading the drivers. Glad that seemed to work, at least.
Regards,
Neil
2. August, 2007, 11:06Bernard:
Guys, be careful, if you go for the standard windows installation, you will find only one difficulty, which is using the server in an IBM Director environment (the service processor, BMC, will be detected offline or not available, and the IBM Director Agent won’t be able to detect any hardware failure), you will need to install the IPMI drivers in a very specific order, which is the following:
1- OSA IPMI Device Driver for Microsoft Windows
2- Mapping Layer for OSA IPMI on IA32 Windows
3- IBM IPMI Automatic Server Restart Windows Software Installation
of course you can download all of them from the IBM support website.
Good Luck
2. August, 2007, 12:11Neil Bell:
Thanks Bernard,
Like Lukas, I have got it all working fine on another machine that is virtually identical (more HDs and RAM). Annoyingly this machine seems to think that there is a problem with both PSUs and that it is overspec (all top 3 leds lit), even though I have switched the PSUs between the machines (no problems in other machine and still lit in the first machine, despite being different PSUs).
Anyway, retrying ServeGuide install having changed to RAID 10 and playing with drive config. Standard windows install wasn’t any good anyway, cos it seemed to only want floppy drive for drivers and, big surprise, none installed.
Fingers crossed but after that I will have to get IBM to come and have a look.

Hello all,
I had the same problem to install Windows Server 2003 with the Server Guide 7.4.13.
After calling IBM support, they told me to download and to use the Server Guide 7.4.2. And it works with this “old” version.
9. August, 2007, 14:39Neil Bell:
I found that after swapping over the raid controller with another identical model it loaded up fine. Very strange…

Can anyone advice me on this IBM x3650 server i want to create one simple volume and i mirror drive. and install my os on simple volume.
10. September, 2007, 21:36is it possible i already created Array-0 as simple volume and Array-1 and mirror drive i have 3 drive on this server.
Bernard:
Any Updates regarding the use of the ServerGuide? I’m still having the same problems, I’m obliged to press F6 on the first installation screen of windows 2003, then use the ServeRaid Drivers on a floppy.
11. September, 2007, 17:18SSE:
I was just reading through here and came across the version of ServerGuide some of you were using and I said to myself:”How come IBM shipped me a old version of the above mentioned product?”. But after seen Pitounet answer from IBM I rest in peace, because I have the 7.4.02 version and it works superb. I also tried to install SBS 2003 R2 without it and it gave me a message saying that the system did not find any hard drives. Well, I went ahead and downloaded the SAS drives from IBM which it worked only 1/2 way. And by this I meant the when the F6 key is pressed to install device drivers it will see the usb floppy and the Adaptec driver for the HDD, but whe the OS is getting ready to install there goes your setup it asks for the factory floppy labled Adaptec SAS RAID V5.1.0 Build 9247. So I just went for the ServerGuide installation assistance.

Hello
3. December, 2007, 21:34i recently bought this server and i would like to know if can i install a SATA disk in the SAS controller?
Thank you
SSE:
No, you have to use a SAS HDD since this is the SAS version for SCSI. SATA will not work connector and the technologies use are different.
5. December, 2007, 14:41varj:
Do people usually use the serverguide cd to install their o/s’s? I’m new in this business and i was put in charge of installing 2003 on a new x3650 (quadcore mmmm…..) so i opened the manual-package and used the serverguide to install windows. My colleagues told me that they’ve never done that and that most manuals we have here are still unopened and wrapped in plastic.
SSE: if it’s the PCI-led on the diagnostics-card, then it’s not the pci-led that’s flashing, it’s the server-locater led. Bit of a miss in the construction, locator led should be shielded better so it doesn’t shine through to the other indicators.
6. December, 2007, 13:34achmad nasir:
Hi,
Just saw comment that you cannot use SATA disks on x3650, but IBM has been promoting that you might intermix SAS / SATA …. Is this through using EXP3000 expansion units? with Megaraid adapter card installed in the server….
10. December, 2007, 17:07Jason:
Or DS4700 Storage units.

I am interested in buying an x3650, but I can’t find a couple of things out here…
1. does it take 3.5″ SATA disks in the default configuration? the vertical slots look larger in the pictures…
14. January, 2008, 16:332. since it doesn’t have any PS/2 connectors, how do you attach it to a KVM? Is there an adapter?
Lukas Beeler:
brandon,
1. There are 3.5″ and 2.5″ configurations. Both only take SAS disks in their respective form factor. The 3.5″ config supports either 6 disks or 4 disks and a SFF tape drive. The 2.5″ config supports 8disks and a SFF tape drive.
2. You’ll need an USB capable KVM switch or use an RSA II card. We usually have both. Many modular KVM switches support both PS/2 and USB connections.
14. January, 2008, 17:01brandon:
That helps, thank you.
after some searching on the IBM site, I found this:
http://www-03.ibm.com/servers/eserver/xseries/cog/x3650/x3650hdd.html
it has a nice diagram of the six bay config.

I have setup an x3650 with by default came with 2 DC processors.
I have removed one processor. However, the system cannot boot at all.
23. January, 2008, 08:21What should I do for accomplishing this? I have to do this due to licensing issues which we paid only for a single processor license.
Lukas Beeler:
Rahman,
You need to plug the second CPU, and replace the slot with a blind. You’ll have to order that from IBM.
You can also leave the second CPU installed and limit the number of CPUs available to Windows. This can be done by setting the approriate boot option.
23. January, 2008, 11:02Rahman:
Dear Lukas,
Oh, I have checked and the result the dummy part number is 39M6802. Thanks for the idea.
Perhaps, the /numproc=1 would be the temporary and best option. By the way, I have to buy the dummy set soonest possible.
Appreciate much of your prompt reply.

thanks for the images, that has been very helpful. especially the information about the abstinence of PS/2 ports, since i was planning a KVM switch with PS/2 – good information. im planning on using 2 x3650 as a vmware servers, alot of RAM and 6+1 drives – the only thing im worried about are the SFF drives. donno why but i have kind of a bad feeling using these little drives instead of 3.5inch, as its used for a critical application. too bad the server cant hold 8 3.5inch hdds but only 6. =)
10. April, 2008, 10:15Lukas Beeler:
noexen,
By now i’ve deployed over 15 x3650 in the field. Most of them with 4-8 2.5″ SFF drives. So far, i’ve had 2 defect drives. That’s perfectly in range with the error numbers i saw with the 3.5″ drives.
They *do* lock finicky, but they aren’t.

IBM surely can add some more paperwork with the server, the manual for the 3.5′ sas hdd is bigger than the one with the server :)

I’ve been running WS08 RTM on two x3650 (One Hyper-V Host, one Exchange 2007) since April. Drivers for the ServeRAID Controllers are builtin, and drivers for the RSA, Graphic Card, etc. are provided by IBM. ServeRAID Manager works flawlessly too.

I will download all available updates from IBM X support site and than post a follow up, about what i have done. I have to figure out how to configure the IIS7 to accept client certificates that are not connected to Active Directory and not using external CA. Do you know if it is possible to make one 2008 Server standart to become both CA and WEB /IIS7+FTP/ Server. The whole idea is adding an extra layer of protection for the web based application hosted on the machine, so it would accept connections only from clients with certificates. But as you may guess, i have not done something like that especially in srv.08 so i am now reading whatever i can get my hands on, but still can not find any detailed information on the subject. Can you please help me with that, if you know some good sites where i can find information about that?

I hav installed with no problems a x3650 server with 2 SAS 300 GB HD, un Xeon 2.66 Ghz processor, 8 GB of RAM, and Windows Server 2003 R2.
29. September, 2008, 15:43The problem appeared when I begin the installation of Oracle 10g instances.
The Server takes too long to shutdown or restart. With only one instance it takes almost 25 minutes until the BIOS POST screen appears. From this point, it has normal booot. Looking at the System and App events viewer, there is no error reported, but a gap of 15 to 25 minutes form the order of shutdown and the stop of the eventlog.
In the Oracle Alert logs there is no error messages also.
Do I need to update firmaware or disk drivers to solve this. I’ve installed it with the Server Guide CD that came with the server (I repeat: “with no problems”).
Thanks in advance.

I bought 6x 1TB Western Digital SATA drives (WD1002FBYS) and set up two RAID 1 mirrors, each with its own hot spare.
I think I can say now that ServeRAID 8K definitely does not support these drives. In Windows 2003 R2 the OS crashes within seconds of reaching over to the second mirror for a copy. All drivers and firmwares are current. The bus speed has been turned down to 1.5Gb/s. Copy speed on the C: drive was sustained at around 20MB/s.
Anybody got a clue what to do to make these drives work in this server?

We are using this to run our backups. If the server reboots due to power issues, it does not complete the boot sequence if an external hard drive is connected to a USB port. Once you unplug the USB device it boots normally. Any suggestions. Tried calling IBM and found out this server comes with only a one year warranty.

Hi all!!! I’ve got one major problem with x3650 and would appreciate help very much. So the thing is that we’ve bought x3650 and wanted to install win 2008 on it. First we installed second Quad 2ghz CPU and started installation. After few steps blue screen appeared. To be precise server guide finished and copied all files to disk and rebooted the server. After reboot blue screen was shown. After that we removed second CPU and did it all again. This time everything went fine. We installed win 2008. After that we shut down the machine and installed again second CPU. After that windows fail to boot. Wanted to flash BIOS but saw that it already had the latest version 1.12 . In BIOS we saw that the first CPU ID is *676 and other *67A everything else (cache, speed…) is the same. Does anyone have any idea how to solve this problem. Thanx
9. January, 2009, 12:22Ozren Cimesa:
Just to let know anyone who was interested in my problem what was the problem. Second CPU has same cache and speed (2Ghz) quad core but it was from another series and has different voltage. IBM made a mistake and only way to repair it is either to find same CPU as is the first one or wait for IBM to make new BIOS upgrade that will fix this problem. Hope this helped someone.

Hi everybody
I want to buy this server but the 1TB IBM SATA drives are way too expensive (740USD). Do you if I can use regular Western Digital 1TB disks and put them instead of the others? (They cost 160USD, and I need to install six).
16. January, 2009, 15:22If I can, do you know what SATA drives does it support? I’ve seend 1.5TB SATA Samsung hard drives, and I’ll probably buy them if I can make them work.

Brandon:
Hi Ariel,
I thought the same and bought 6x Western Digital 1TB PartNo. WD1002FBYS. Unfortunately they did not want to work well with the system. I tried different configurations- dual RAID 1 and RAID 5 but the drives were slow then would hang for 20 seconds. The only thing that would work is RAID 10. They are working now in that config under win2k3

16. January, 2009, 15:38Ariel Cabral:
Could it be a possible problem of the RAID controller or that precise model of disk? I’ve heard that some WD disks aren’t recognised by some motherboards chipsets. Are there any firmware upgrades for the RAID controller? Is it working properly with raid 10 config?

16. January, 2009, 15:53Ariel Cabral:
Hey Brandon, one more question
Were you able to buy those disks trays separately? I’ve phoned a lot of sales reps and the want to sell them to me but with a hard drive attached
Thanks
16. January, 2009, 15:59Brandon:
I had the ServeRAID 8k with cache. All firmwares (mainboard, raid contorller, backplane, etc…) are up-to-date. I wouldn’t buy the same disks again. But IBM does not manufacture their HDDs themselves- so it should be possible to find out exactly which drive it is.
I have 10 carriers (compatible to FRU 42R4130) left over. Write me in case you’re interested: bthomas _at_ intersystems.de

Hello there Ariel!
I’ll give you the exact information you need to make sure your server works fine. Keep in mind that this is a 146 GB HDD and it is from IBM ( although purchased from a different vendor, IBM will charge you 1K or so for it, I paid 345.00 new) also it is a SAS this is the SATA version of SCSI and make sure when you get it you said is for a 3.5″ bay and it must come with its own mounting:
IBM SAS
146 GB HDD 15k RPM
FRU 39R7350
Let me know if this was of any help to you.

29. January, 2009, 14:14Lukas Beeler:
Ozren, you need two IDENTICAL CPUs.
29. January, 2009, 14:15Ozren Cimesa:
Yeah know that thou, we ordered second CPU from IBM by part number. They sent us this one. It has same performance 2.0 Ghz quad core, same amount of cache but in BIOS only diference is ID first one is 676 and second 67A. A guy who works for IBM here in Croatia told us that second CPU doesn’t work on same voltage, it’s a bit higher. Lukas do you think there’s any way to make this work. Oh yeah and that same guy from IBM told us that the next BIOS update will fix something and make it work. So today we flashed BIOS to newest version 1.13 and still doesn’t work. BIOS reads 2 CPUs but can’t boot win 2008.
29. January, 2009, 14:22Lukas Beeler:
Ozren,
I don’t think there’s anything you can do to make it work. Have IBM service come on site and fix it, probably by replacing both CPUs or the planar.
It is possible that the issue is not with the second CPU, but instead with the planar. But it’s impossible to figure that out without just swapping parts.
29. January, 2009, 14:26Ozren Cimesa:
Lukas thank you a lot. Guess there’s nothing else to do. We really tried not to bother anyone and do it ourselves. :)

Hey all
I have a good one. x3650 support page shows an update for a list of hard drives: There is the list of “supported” hard drives and it says that there’s the possibility for a firmware upgrade.
Here’s the link:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/systems/support/system_x/ibm_fw_hdd_sas-1.03_windows_32-64.chg
Brandon, as you said, there is no Western Digital disks on the supported disks list.

29. January, 2009, 19:45Ozren Cimesa:
Hey just a suggestion about that HDD problems. I think update-ing firmware is a good idea if you haven’t done it yet. Here is the idea IBM UpdateXpress CD 4.06a – Servers.
“The UpdateXpress CD can help reduce your cost of computing by providing an effective and simple way to update server firmware and firmware of supported options contained within the server on most of your xSeries products. If you have purchased an IBM xSeries server, UpdateXpress is available for download at no additional charge. For your convenience, we have also made the UpdateXpress program available in a prepackaged CD. See below to download UpdateXpress or for details on ordering the CD. ”
Maybe it would help. I also found something about some firmware update 1.06b that said it corrected something about 1,5 TB Hitachi HDD, but can’t find it any more. Anyway don’t like betas, so I belive that the last non beta firmware update is in UpdateXpress and may help you.
LINK: http://www-947.ibm.com/systems/support/supportsite.wss/docdisplay?lndocid=MIGR-5072962&brandind=5000008
P.S. You need 44r9863.iso 446234624 UpdateXpress CD 1
Cause CD 2 is for Blade systems.
Hope this helps :)

Hey guys
Please be careful with the 500, 750 and 1TB Seagate disks. After a little research, found out that Seagate released a firmware for the 7200.11 series for correcting a bug related to not seeing the HDDs after a reboot. Seems to be that this firmware ONLY works for the 1GB disks and make the other two absolutely unusable after the upgrading. If you have them installed, I would recommend to wait for an official release (Although these are the official releases). I wouldn’t know if the IBM’s firmwares do the same, but anyway, take it in count.

9. March, 2009, 10:09When we install windows server 2003 by IMB disk. At the step: remove media disk and insert Windows disk, We clicked “next”. Then the system reboot, and have green screen “MULTIPROCESSOR_DOES_NOT_SUPPORTED”.
Please help me
Lukas Beeler:
Thiet,
Ideally, both CPUs should be identical.
You can try switching the places of both CPUs, making the one with less functionality the primary one. This might solve your problem.

I thought I would share my configuration since some are asking about Srvr2008 etc. I am running ESXi on 2 mirrored SAS drives. I am then running Server2008 Standard and Win2003r2 Exchange 2007 on a Raid 5 set in guest VM’s. I have one Guest VM running the SMTP gateway. This is with 2-2.0 procs and 12gb or ram.

Anybody know where to get good IBM support / forums?? Seems Lukas has the best thing out there! I can’t find a darned thing on the IBM website… Even precious google doesn’t know everything!
What I really need to find out now is how to get the ServeRAID manager working on an ESXi4 box… It is an x3850 / SR 8i

Hi brandon,
There’s the System x Forum on IBM’s Website:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/forums/forum.jspa?forumID=740
However, it’s not frequented all that much.
As for your ServeRAID question: You can boot the Support CD to have access to the ServeRAID manager. If you use ESX (not ESXi), maybe you can use the commandline utilities in the management partition.
