Color overlay creation:
Using /QIBM/ProdData/InfoprintServer/Transforms/Install/Image/setup.
exe
to execute this command:
tiff2afp -a ioca45 -pagetype overlay -cmp jpeg foo.tiff
Foo.tiff is a 300x300 A4 picture with 24bit colors, LZW compression.
.
Problem:
We've been using AFP Overlays since a few years, both for printing
and for generation of PDF documents through a PDF printer with 5722-
IP1.
These overlays were always in black and white, and this was working,
and still is working perfectly fine.
Recently we bought a new FS45 capable color printer, which also
prints our new color overlays perfectly.
However, when we print these documents to the mentioned PDF printer,
the creation of the PDF works, but it takes about 5-10 minutes.
During this time, the whole machine becomes rather unresponsive,
issuing simple commands like "WRKSYSSTS" can take up to 5 seconds to
complete.
During this time, the job related to the PDF printer maxes out the
CPU on the machine. As said, the creation of black and white PDFs is
not a problem and only takes a few seconds, but color PDFs do not
work as nice.

Hi
client works with r540 + IP-Server.
He created the devd + psfcfg in the following way:
CRTPSFCFG PSFCFG(QUSRSYS/PRTPDF) PDFGEN(*STMF)
PDFDEVTYPE(*IP40240) PDFPPRDWR1(*A4) PDFPPRDWR2(*A4) PDFMULT(*NO)
PDFDTAQ(*NONE) FNTSUBMSG(*NO) IPDSPASTHR(*NO) PDFDIR('/PDF/')

PORT(5039) ONLINE(*YES) FONT(223) FORMFEED(*AUTOCUT)
RMTLOCNAME('127.0.0.1') USRDFNOBJ(QUSRSYS/PRTPDF *PSFCFG)
*
Converting splf's with black overlays is no problem.
But if client converts splf's with a COLORED overlay the BCH-job will
use much cpu and will need 4 to 10 min to create the streamfile.
I tested the same splf + ovl on our system and there the stmf was
created after 1 min.
We created some joblogs + jobtraces.
They are on ecurep.
Also a screenshot where the bch-job shows that it was active for a long
time.
Also there are savf's with the ovl + splf for testing.
Hope you can see why the convertion is so slow.
Have a nice weekend, Rainer.

SI27658 is the PTF that does the conversion. We are running with the
same level of conversion here, and it takes about 25 seconds.
Assuming the same overlay (DLAGDATA/COLOROVL), and the same conversion,
the only difference is going to be the power of the iSeries they are
using, and its performance tuning. Converting color image does take a
LOT of CPU.
If we have to, we will get our performance team involved to look at the
customer's system performance.
I dumped out the overlay, and it is 600 pel image. I think the
conversion process will proceed quicker, if there is no conversion of
pel density.
The customers printer is *IP40240, or 240 pel.
Could they try creating the overlay at 300 pel? Supposedly, the
tiff2afp will generate 300 pel by default, but perhaps they could use
-r 300 in their command to force 300 pel; recreate the overlay and try
again using *IP40300. If it doesn't help, send the new *OVL object
that they recreated. Also send the input tiff image.

Additional Information:
The overlays need to be in 600 DPI, as the same printing
configuration is also used to print on a real printer, where we need
the 600 DPI resolution.
The downscaling process seems to work flawlessly with b&w PDFs.

Mike,
client changed the psfcfg to *ip40300 .
Now the conversion needs 3 to 4 min, but this is still too long for the
client.
As he described in the previous update, he cannot work with an overlay
which is created in 300 pel.
Other suggestions?

ACTION TAKEN: Mike is on vacation this week. The only difference that
I see reading through the problem is we have tested on 3 different
iSeries getting different results. I would guess the speed of the CPU
and memory is different on all three iSeries. Color images take a lot
of CPU cycles to convert. If you would like me to involve our
performance team to collect performance data and make recommendations
let me know.

Action taken: I spoke to Adam and he is preparing Job Watcher
instructions for this issue. RQ to Adam's attention.
________________________-07/08/07-17:13--AT____________________________
Rainer,
We should probably go ahead and collect 2 things: A 30 min Job Watcher
collection containing a recreate of the issue, and the Collection
Services data from the day of the recreate.
INSTALLING JOB WATCHER
Before we collect Job Watcher, you need to get the pre-req PTF's
applied, install the GUI, and add a license. Here is the website to
check the PTF prereqs adn download the install EXE file:
https://www-912.ibm.com/i_dir/idoctor.nsf/downloadsV5R3.html
Once you have the PTF's applied, and download and install the EXE file
from the web (be sure to select to install client and server), update
the PMR and included confirmation of the serial # and version, and we
will generate the customer a temporary access code for Job Watcher and
assist in setting up collection.
SENDING COLLECTION SERVICES DATA
Assuming the customer has the PT1 tools, you should be all set to get
Collection Services data. Here are the instructions for collecting and
sending CS data:
First, Create a Library to put the data in:
CRTLIB LIB(PMR61235)
Then do the following
1) GO PERFORM
2) From PERFORM menu pick 6. Configure and manage tools
3) From PERFORM menu pick 3. Copy performance data
4) Should see a screen that looks like this
Select Performance Member
Library . . . . QPFRDATA
Type option, press Enter.
1=Select
Option Member Text Date
Time
(No performance data in library)
If you do see performance members in here, skip to step 5. If you do
not then change QPFRDATA to QMPGDATA.
5) Select the appropriate Member you wish to copy from this screen
6) After you select the member from the appropriate time frame with a 1
and hit enter you will see:
Copy Performance Data Member
Type choices, press Enter.
--------Copy From-------- ---------Copy To---------
Member Library Member Library
Q095060107 QMPGDATA Q095060107 QMPGDATA
Change the QMPGDATA to the library we created PMR61235 and hit ENTER.
7) This will submit a job that copies just that day's data to our new
library. If you want me to look at more than one day, you can repeat
this process and add another member to the library. Once you have all
of the data in the library its time to save it off and send it.
Save and send steps
1) CRTSAVF FILE(QGPL/PMR61235)
2) SAVLIB LIB(PMR61235) DEV(*SAVF) SAVF(QGPL/PMR61235) DTACPR(*YES)
3) FTP to testcase
a) FTP TESTCASE.BOULDER.IBM.COM
b) sign on as ANONYMOUS, use your email address as your password
c) LCD QGPL
d) cd toibm/os400
e) bin
f) put PMR61235 61235.212.848.CS.SAVF
STARTING JOB WATCHER COLLECTION:
1) Apply access code as provided by PERF (after you confirm serial #)
2) CRTLIB IBMJW
3) QSYS/SBMJOB CMD(QIDRWCH/WCHJOB OUTLIBMBR(IBMJW Q219105905)
REPLACE(*YES) UNTIL(((*DASDMB 3072)) ((*NBRSEC 1800)) ) INTDELAY(5)

DATATYPEC((*CONFLICTCALLSTACK 1) (*BADBLOCKCALLSTACK 1) )
TEXT('InfoPrint') ) JOB(QWCHJOB) JOBD(QIDRWCH/QIDRBCH)
JOBQ(QGPL/QIDRJW) INLLIBL(*CURRENT) RTGDTA(*JOBD) CNTRYID(US) CCSID(37)
4) Re-Create issue while collection is running (for the next 30 mins).
SENDING JOB WATCHER DATA:
1) Same instructions for sending CS data but you will be saving the
library IBMJW to a SAVF PMR61235JW, and when you do the FTP put,
PUT PMR61235JW 61235.212.848.JW.SAVF.
ACTION PLAN SUMMARY:
1) Get JW PTFs and application installed, access code applied
2) Recreate issue while JW collection is running
3) Send SAVF of JW data library and Collection Services member to
testcase

Action taken: I have restored and summarized the Job Watcher and
Collection Services data on SQ2 in PMR61235.
I reviewed the Job Watcher data and see that the PRTPDF
job is consuming the majority of CPU on the system
during the time it was running. It is spending time in
CPU queuing which indicates that it would use more
processor capacity if it were available. There is some
page faulting being seen but that may be normal in that
there is data that has to be brought into memory from the
disk units so that it can be processed.
It appears that there were 3 print operations during this
test. The first started at 15:36:29 and ended at 15:40:40
(4 mins 11 secs), the second started at 15:43:26 and
ended at 15:47:18 (3 mins 52 secs), the third started at
15:47:18 and ended at 15:51:09 (3 mins 51 secs). It would
appear that each print operation takes approximately 4
minutes to complete.
Here is a breakdown of the time spent by the PRTPDF job on
the system.
CPU - 83.73%
CPU queuing - 12.46%
Page faults _ 1.94%
Socket receive - 1.56
All other waits - 0.31%
As can be seen, this job is not waiting on very much.
Based on the data reviewed, investigation of the following
actions may want to be explored. Additional processor
capacity could posibly reduce the CPU queuing being seen
on the system. An increase in the size of the SPOOL pool
may reduce the amount of page faulting being seen.
If the print operation is taking 4 minutes at the present
time it might be possible to improve that by ~15% if there
was no waiting at all during the print. This would improve
the print time by 36 seconds in a perfect environment.
The CPU during this time was at 100% system wide which
will impact all jobs on the system. I noticed that there
was not much of a workload on the system at the time that
the print was done. If there had been additional jobs then
the print time would have been even higher.
The PRTPDF job is spending most of its time in CPU, this
is due to processing. If the amount of processing (work)
can not be reduced then a faster processor may be
required. This would require some type of sizing or
benchmark activity.
I can not find any indication that there is a system OS
performance issue here.
Collection Services data performed was also reviewed. The
data provided did not cover the time period of the test.
Action plan: RQ to PB to update the local support team with what was
found in the data provided.

act: Made a conf call with my colleague and client. We explain client
the update from rochester again and afterwards we discussed the
problem with client.
Client accpted the answer but he is not so happy about it. We told
client he can made a design request and send it to rochester.
nac: Client will discuss the problem with his manager. Client didn't
know if he made a design request. He agree to close the call.
